Westobou Crossing & Higher Education District

The Westobou Crossing and Higher Education District is the only Master Plan District that spans both sides of the Savannah River. Both the private and public sectors from North Augusta and Augusta are cooperating on this huge endeavor.

The Westobou Crossing Market Creation Project (explained below) is a huge project that will spur additional economic development activities on both sides of the Savannah River while requiring resources from both Georgia and South Carolina to develop.

The Big Idea: Tie Augusta and North Augusta together with a waterfront development that spans the Savannah River.

Cost: $90 million private, $25 million public

Details: Consider converting the 5th Street Bridge to a bicycle/pedestrian path that links downtown Augusta with Hamburg in South Carolina. Create a fishing center on the Hamburg Brick Pond. Install 200 riverfront residential units. Create some retail space. Incorporate residential and retail development on the old Coca-Cola bottling plant and former Watermark sites on Reynolds Street in Augusta.

Time: 10 to 20 years
